Marry You (A CheshireRedArrow Drabble)

Nervously Jay waited, he knew that he was asking for it but it was the right thing to do – damn his morals. Walking into the store he looks at the lady behind the counter anxiously he quickly mutters his name to her she disappears to the back room to get his purchases. Looking around his foot taps impatiently against the floor, the rest of the jewelry was so expensive, he just hopes that Rory doesn’t mind that the ring was plain; the fact that she reassured him that it didn’t matter only made him worry more. No one could always be content like she is, never complaining about anything in their relationship, scratch that – anything besides them breaking up that is. Watching as the woman returns he notices that she looks almost disdainful and asks what the problem is. The woman can’t help but blush, caught in mid-thought she stammers out a half coherent sentence. It’s always the attractive ones that get taken early in life.  Gathering her thoughts she smiles and finally says, “Oh, I was just admiring this beautiful ring, this girl must be really special.” He smiles, that she is – and no matter what she told him, he’s the lucky one.

As she puts it in a case he grins and places it in his pocket, his confidence returning until he realizes what he decided he was going to do next. Walking across the mall he sees the small Italian restaurant that he agreed to meet her at and looked around and a feeling of panic began to grow in the pit of his stomach. Walking over he lightly clears his throat and waits for her to look up, and seeing a look of ‘just sit down’ he quickly takes a seat. Glancing up at the blonde woman he grimaces, how was it that she could be so intimidating and before he can say anything she cuts in, “I know why you’re here.” Well that was blunt. “I guess I should thank you for calling me to do this Jay.” he notices the slight grimace as she says his name. “I know that I haven’t been all that accepting of your relationship but I want you to know that I do respect you for what you’ve done.” She clears her throat uncomfortably and continues, “I know that you love her, hell you’re the only man in her life that’s ever stood up to me when it came to your relationship and it’s very much appreciated.” His eyes glance up from the table to the woman he assumed hated him and saw the admiration in her eyes. “So, go ahead and ask away.”

His eyes widen, she was giving him permission to- right, so before this graciousness ended. He clears his throat, nervousness returning “Right, well” he continues to stutter, this was going to be much harder than he thought and before he could continue the waitress came and interrupted his train of thought. Scowling his words left him, he absentmindedly ordered and zoned out as Olivia ordered, the two of them watched as she walked away. Stiffening he realizes that Olivia’s eyes were on him once again, it was now or never… “So, Miss Queen” his eyes now glancing up, searching her face to see if he’s offended her and slowly continues, “I called you here today to-” to tell you what you already know “to ask you for your daughter’s hand in marriage.”

Olivia sighed; she knew this was going to be difficult. Studying his face closely she notices hope and nervousness, causing her to smile and shakes her head slightly – he really did love her. Looking at him she relents “Yes you can marry her,” looking at him carefully she continues, “just promise me you’ll keep her safe.”

He smiles ecstatically, not expecting her approval would be given so freely. “T-thank you. Of course I will.”

She can’t help but smile at the look on his face, “Good.” She looks towards the door and smiling she waves. Turning around Jay’s eyes widen as he sees Rory and another blonde man walking up to the table. Getting up Olivia pulls who he can only assume is Danny into a hug, standing up he hugs Rory tightly more than glad at the recent turn of events. As the four of them sit at the table Olivia looks at Jay, “So, is there something that you want to ask Rory?”

He looks at the two blonds nervously before clearing his throat and gently grabs Rory’s hand, the other reaching for the ring concealed in his pocket. “Rory Harper,” he grins slightly “I know you’re probably tired of me asking you this but” placing the case on the table he opens the lid slowly “will you marry me?”

Rory’s eyes widen as he opens the small container and she smiles seeing the ring, “Yes, of course I’ll marry you.” Squeezing his hand gently she leans in and kisses him, not caring that Olivia and Danny were watching.

Pulling away Jay smiles, and with a shaking hand he places the ring on her finger. “I love you Rory.”

“I love you too.” Rory glances over at Olivia and smiles and looks down at the ring on her finger and kisses him again. “It’s perfect.”

He looks at her gently and smiles, “You’re sure; it’s not too small-”

She cuts him off by kissing him, “Jay, the ring's amazing."
